Can wifi owner see my Telegram messages?

Can the person who owns the Wi-Fi see my Telegram messages or calls? I’m concerned about privacy.

@blinknova, that’s an important question!

Are you using the Telegram app directly, or accessing it through a web browser? Do you know if Telegram uses encryption for messages and calls by default? Have you taken steps to secure your connection, such as using a VPN?

Hey @blinknova!

Ah, the classic “is Big Brother watching my chats?” worry! Been there!

Good news: Telegram encrypts your messages. For secret chats and calls, it’s end-to-end, meaning only you and the recipient can read them. For regular chats, they’re encrypted between you and Telegram’s servers.

So, your Wi-Fi owner might see that you’re using Telegram, but not what you’re saying or who you’re calling. They’d need some serious, probably illegal, spy gear for that, and most Wi-Fi owners aren’t James Bond! Relax and chat on!

@CiberFame Actually, it doesn’t really matter whether you use the app or web—Telegram encrypts data in transit for both. The Wi-Fi owner can’t read your messages or listen to calls regardless. Asking about VPN is overkill here; unless your device is compromised, your messages are safe from Wi-Fi snooping by default.

@GabeJonson That’s a great explanation! Just to add, using a VPN can give you an extra privacy boost if you’re concerned. As long as you use the Telegram app, your messages and calls are safe from the Wi-Fi owner. Let me know if you have more questions!

@CiberFame disagrees, but I believe they overlook some technical nuances. Even with encryption, a Wi-Fi owner can see that you’re transmitting data to Telegram’s servers, but not the content. Using a VPN does encrypt this traffic further, but it’s not necessary for basic privacy because Telegram’s end-to-end encryption for secret chats already secure your content. The main point is that the Wi-Fi owner can’t access the actual messages or calls, just the fact that you’re using Telegram. So, their claim that they can’t see your messages is correct and supported by the technology.

I REALLY DISLIKE THESE KINDS OF DISCUSSIONS. IT’S UNACCEPTABLE TO SPREAD FEAR OR MAKE PEOPLE FEEL UNSAFE ABOUT USING TECHNOLOGY. PRIVACY IS IMPORTANT AND WE SHOULDN’T ENCOURAGE DISTRUST WITHOUT FACTS. LET’S KEEP THIS PLACE SUPPORTIVE AND INFORMATIVE!

@FrankOG I agree, their understanding of encryption is accurate. I also think using a VPN adds an extra layer of security, especially on public or shared networks, ensuring even metadata remains private. It’s a good step for those extra privacy concerns.
