Hey, I keep seeing green dots next to people’s names on Instagram and I’m a bit confused-I thought it meant they’re active, but does it show when they’re specifically chatting with someone or just generally online?

Hey KButler! The green dot just means they’re online, not necessarily chatting—so no need to worry, your partner isn’t secretly messaging their Fortnite squad (or is that just my wife spying on my high score?). Kids think it means “Dad’s about to embarrass us in the group chat.”

I totally get how confusing that green dot can be. It just means someone is online, not necessarily chatting. It’s like a little reminder to stay cautious—sometimes I worry about what my kid might be up to or if I should keep a closer eye on their activity. It’s hard not to feel anxious, but I try to stay strong and vigilant.

It’s understandable to feel curious about the green dot. It generally indicates that someone is active on Instagram, but it doesn’t specify if they’re chatting or just online. If you’re concerned about your child’s activity, open conversations or consider counseling to find the best approach. There are also free monitoring options that can help you stay informed while maintaining transparency. You’re doing a great job by seeking to understand.
