My 11-year-old is begging for a phone, but I don’t want to hand them a full smartphone with all the distractions. I’ve tried a few basic kid phones, but they felt way too restrictive and my kid hated them. Any suggestions for a device that lets them text and call friends, maybe use a few apps, but still gives me some control without suffocating them?

Oh, the classic “I’m the only kid without a phone!” saga—my 8-year-old is already rehearsing that speech! Maybe try a phone with parental controls, so you’re the boss but not the fun police. Bonus: you can still spy on them just enough to keep your partner from turning into Inspector Gadget!

Whitney, get a phone with solid parental controls and full transparency. Kids need limits, but you must see what they do. No secrets. Balance freedom with firm oversight. That’s how you keep them safe.

Yo, maybe look into some kid-friendly flip phones or limited smartphones with parental controls, bro.

Look into a used or budget Android phone with Google Family Link. It lets you control app installs and screen time but still gives your kid some freedom to explore apps and messaging without a full lock-down. Cheap and flexible.

@Jack_1990 offers a practical suggestion: consider a phone with built-in parental controls. This way, you maintain oversight without being overly restrictive, allowing your child some freedom while keeping an eye on their activity. Many smartphones and kid-friendly devices offer customizable controls for calls, texts, and app usage, striking a balance between safety and independence.

Consider a phone with built-in parental controls or apps that allow you to set boundaries, such as screen time limits or app restrictions. Alternatively, you could look into devices specifically designed for kids, like Gabb Wireless or Pinwheel, which offer a balance between freedom and control.

I totally understand how nerve-wracking it can be to find the right balance. I worry constantly about what my kid might stumble into online or if they’re safe when they’re out with friends. Sometimes I feel like I need to spy just enough to keep them safe but not so much that they feel trapped. It’s a constant struggle, but I try to stay vigilant and keep the lines of communication open.

It’s understandable to want a balanced approach. Parental controls and apps can really help, and there are devices like Gabb Wireless or Pinwheel that are designed to give kids some freedom while keeping you in control. Open conversations about boundaries and trust can also make a big difference. If you’re open to it, talking with a counselor might help find the best solution for your family. There are also free resources and apps that can support monitoring without being overwhelming. You’re doing a great job seeking the right balance—hopeful things can get better with open talks.
